Instant Water Heaters - What You Should Know

    November 20, 2008 by admin

Whether you are thinking about remodeling or making some changes to improve energy efficiency in your home there are some things you should know about instant (or tank-less) water heaters. Whether you are interested in conserving water, saving energy, or you just want to save some money, these water heating devices might fit the bill.

Depending on your needs and the amount of hot water you use in a day, you might want to think about either a whole-house tank-less water heater or about instant water heating units in strategic places in your house. These units are compact, efficient and affordable.

Here are the main things you should know about these water heating devices:

    1. Tank-less water heaters produce hot water by heating an element that then heats the water as it passes across the element on its way to the tap.

    2. The name “tank-less” comes from the fact that there is no water storage tank that is part of these systems.

    3. The systems save energy because they don’t keep the water in a storage tank at a constant temperature. You only heat what you actually use when you use it.

    4. With these systems, you don’t have to worry about leaks because the storage tank or a pipe cracks. Your home and furnishings will be safer.

    5. There are two kinds of instant water heaters – those powered by electricity and those powered by natural gas. Gas-powered units can produce more water flow than electric units.

    6. The cost of a whole-house tank-less unit will range between $199 and $4000.

    7. Tank-less systems usually last 20 years or more. Traditional water heaters with storage units generally last only 10 to 15 years.

    8. If you use a lot of hot water in a day, a tank-less system will use 8% less energy. If you use very little hot water in a day, they can save as much as 50% in energy use.

    9. The cost of supplying hot water to your home can be reduced by up to 60% by switching to a tank-less system.

    10. Instant water heating units heat between two and five gallons of water a minute.

    11. Because of the limited amount (2 – 5 gallons a minute) heated by these units, you will not be able to run two demands for hot water at a time (such as running the dishwasher and taking a shower). This drawback can be overcome by installing a booster unit or by just installing units in each place you use hot water.

    12. Instant units are small and self-contained. They take little space and don’t need two water supply pipes running to the unit.

    13. Instant water heating units are ideal in places where hot water is needed only occasionally, such as a garage sink, a hot tub, an outdoor cooking area or a pet bathing area.

    14. Instant units are also perfect in places where you need hot water only when the areas of the home are in use, such as a pool house or a guest bathroom.

    15. Instant units are also perfect in guest houses, vacation homes and exterior showers for beach homes. Because there is no risk of leaking or flooding the property in case of a leak, you can close up the property when it is not in use and not have to worry. Then when the property is reopened, you don’t have to wait for hot water while the whole storage tank heats.

Before you make remodeling decisions about plumbing, think about whether an instant water heater might meet your needs more efficiently. If you are looking to make your hot water supply more efficient and conserve water, you might want to consider an instant water heater – you won’t even waste water waiting for the hot water to reach the tap!

Vacation Homes and Tankless Water Heaters

    October 21, 2008 by admin

Making the switch in your vacation home from a traditional water heater to a tankless water heater just might be a very good move. You might find that this switch could make a significant contribution to reducing the costs of maintaining and operating your vacation home, to saving water and money on your water bill, and to protecting your investment in the property. Vacation homes and tankless water heaters are actually excellent partners.

Everyone has heard stories of people opening the door of their vacation home, expecting a relaxing stay, only to discover a minor flood somewhere in the house. A leak in your primary residence will probably be noticed before much damage is done – because you are there and you would know if something went wrong. A leaking hot water heater in a vacation home could do serious damage before it was noticed.

Many families with vacation homes rent or loan them out to family, friends and co-workers. Every time someone uses your vacation home, you provide instructions about how to turn everything on and how to start up the hot water heater. If the unit is electric, this is a fairly simple matter. But if you have a gas water heater, the procedure is a bit more complex. When guests leave your vacation home, you probably ask them to turn off the hot water heater – then you cross your fingers and hope they do so.

Installing tankless (instant) water heaters in a vacation home eliminates the whole start up and shut down process and protects your property from water damage that could result from a leaking hot water heater. It also gives you peace of mind. You can be more confident that your investment in the property is safer.

The use of tankless water heaters in a vacation home will also conserve water and energy. There will be no extended period of running water and waiting for the hot water to reach the tap. There will also be no need to continuously heat a large amount of water to a standard temperature when it might not be needed for quite some time.

Heating only the amount of water you need at only the time you actually need it is a perfect way to provide hot water in a vacation home. In the process you can also protect your vacation paradise from the risk of an unexpected small flood.

    Solar Water Heaters

Solar Water HeatersSolar hot water heating systems are a great way to effectively conserve energy and reduce your energy bill.

Contrary to popular belief, this is not a new technology. These systems have been used commercially for over a century now, with the first commercial water heater (the Climax Solar-Water Heater) going on sale in 1891 in the United States. By the year 1900, over 1600 houses in California were equipped with this solar heater.

Due to its effectiveness and low cost, the solar hot water gained popularity until, by 1941, more than half the population of Florida was getting its hot water this way!

Solar heating only lost its popularity as a result of lowered electricity rates, and an aggressive campaign by Florida Power and Light to increase electrical consumption. This was done by offering electric water heaters at bargain prices. Thus Florida’s production of solar hot water was brought to halt.

The United States is not the only country with a solar heating history. There are many other countries where it was once used, and has since fallen out of use - but not all of them. In fact, there are currently more than ten million Japanese households which heat their water using solar power. This is definite proof that it is a workable technology. Energy Saving With Your Propane Water Heater

    July 30, 2008 by admin

Do you know how much of an average household’s total energy use goes to water heating? 14%; it is usually the second largest part of your energy bill. We use hot water throughout the whole year so any energy-saving strategy will make a big difference. Here are three tips to cut your water heating bill by one-fourth or more.

Insulate the water heater tank and hot water pipes: First, you have to check if your propane water heater needs insulation. Most of the new water heaters already have enough and no additional insulation is necessary. After checking that, then you can use foam wrap to insulate the hot water pipes all over the house. Insulating your water heater and hot water pipes will make a big difference and it will easily pay for itself in less than a year. You should also insulate the first few feet of the cold water pipe nearest the heater. Make sure you keep the foam insulation at least three inches from the heater drafthood and exhaust vent. You can use a fiberglass insulation blanket to wrap your propane water heater. These insulation kits are widely available at minimal cost. Make sure you leave the top and the area near the bottom open so that the pilot and burner can have air and your heater works properly. Also the control panel should not be insulated. (Make sure you read the safety instructions and not do anything against them. It is highly recommended that you should consult a professional plumber for insulation.)

Turn down the temperature: There is no need for water to be hotter than 120 - 125 degrees Fahrenheit. Higher temperatures are not only a waste but also a danger, especially for children. If the control panel of your water heater does not have temperatures, you can use a cooking thermometer to check the temperature of the water in your sink or bath and then determine where to set the button to get a temperature of 120 degrees Fahrenheit. Also if you think you need really hot water to sterilize your dishes and clothes, let me tell you that it is nothing more than a myth. You can set the button to the hottest, still your dishes and clothes will not be sterilized.

    Repair or Replace:
Statistically the average lifetime of a water heater is 12 years. Although with regular maintenance and routine repairs it can be two or three times longer, it is not always to your advantage to keep the old units. The new, energy-saving water heaters will pay for themselves within 3-5 years. You can replace almost all components of a water heater except the tank itself, so when the tank rusts through the only solution is to replace the water heater. There are internal anode rods that protect the water heater against rusting. Replacing these anodes every 3-4 years will considerably add to the life of the water heater.

Another problem with your water heater can be the overheating from sediment build-up inside the tank. You should also have it inspected along with the anodes periodically. Some plumbing contractrors offer warranties of 10 years or even lifetime which are worth looking into.

Solar water heaters are extremely useful household appliance. These heaters provide ample warm water. Unlike other water heaters, these do not harm the environment. They save a large amount of non renewable energy too. Researches too have proved that these water heaters are quite beneficial. Due to these advantages, solar water heaters are recommended every where.

    How solar water heater works?:
These heaters come with storage tank and solar collector. These are kept in direction facing towards the sun. The water is passed through the storage tank and it is heated due to sunlight. It is assured that these tanks are exposed to sunlight. Sometimes these heaters are used as pre-heaters, with other systems. In this case, water is allowed to pass through this solar heater before it reaches the standard water heater. There are two pipes, which connect the solar water tank to water heater inside the house. There is one outlet pipe and other is the inlet pipe. Outlet pipe carries warm water from solar heater to standard heater. The second pipe carries the water in opposite direction. The water heater is painted black, to absorb a lot of light. Some of these are covered with acrylic plastic, which do not allow the heat to escape.

    How to install these heaters?:
Consult the buyer before buying these water heaters. He will inform you, what size of heater will be suitable for your family. These solar water heaters can be installed with the help of the professionals. Choose suitable place for their installation. Make sure that these heaters are placed facing the sun.

What can be approximate cost of these heaters?
Solar water heater cost vary to a large extent. This ranges from $ 1500 to $ 3000. You may choose one fitting your requirements.

What are major benefits of these water heaters?
These Water heaters have a number of advantages. They are environment friendly and do not cause any pollution. Secondly, they reduce your electricity expenditure to a large extent. They are quite energy efficient.

Why Tankless Water Heaters Make Sense

    July 28, 2008 by admin

Tankless water heaters are also known as instant water heaters. These units make sense for homeowners for several reasons. In vacation homes they can be very desirable. Here are some of the main reasons why tankless water heaters make sense as opposed to the traditional water heater.

    1. Tankless water heaters conserve energy. Traditional water heaters have a tank that is constantly filled with water. The traditional water heater provides hot water in your home by constantly heating the water in the tank to maintain it at a set temperature. Tankless water heaters work differently. Tankless units heat water by activating a set of coils that become hot when the unit is turned on. As the water passes over the coils, it is heated. The temperature set on the control determines how hot the water will be when it comes out of the tap and, thus, how hot the coils become and how quickly the water moves across the coils. Tankless water heaters conserve energy by only heating the amount of water needed at a given moment and by heating the water only when it is needed.

    2. Tankless water heaters are perfect for vacation and second homes. When you are not staying in a second home or a vacation home, it is always wise to turn off any appliances and utilities not in use. This saves money and protects your property. Use of tankless water heaters in these second homes eliminates the risk of a leaking water heater tank, eliminates the cost of leaving the water heater running when the house is not in use, and eliminates the long wait when you do use the house while the gallons and gallons of water in the tank reach the desired temperature.

    3. Tankless water heaters are a perfect idea when water must travel from one end of the house (where the hot water heater is located) to the other end of the house (a second or third bathroom). If you are serious about conserving water, consider the amount of water used when you run water waiting for the hot water to reach the tap you are using. If there is only a short distance between the water heater and the tap, you might not waste a lot of water. But if the water must travel to the other end of the house, you could waste a large amount of water and you might find that the water cools somewhat as it passes through the pipes. A tankless water heater provides instant hot water at the desired temperature.

If you are a homeowner interested in conserving water, conserving energy, or protecting your investment in a second home or a vacation home, you might want to consider installing tankless water heaters.
